This post is an explanation of Advanced Skills, or TalYphs, in TERA. It covers what they are are and how to farm them. Advanced Skills, or TalYphs, are another way of customizing your character in TERA. The "optimal" skill choices are relatively fixed for the most part so it is less of a customization and more of something for you to farm and max out as you play. Note that with Patch 92, you'll get 2141 Skill Advancement Scroll I's, 240 Skill Optimizaiton Scroll I's, and about 30 points forth of XP for completing the quest line [Important] The Nightmare Begins, which unlocks after completing Apex and precedes Exodor.

- Essential Mana also did a writeup on the Skill Advancement system and their tables for looking up the specific Tal and Yph values is easier to navigate than the google docs.
Simple Explanation
The Advanced skills are unlocked as you reach each level from 66 to 70. They are referred to as TalYphs because they are kind of like EP Talents and Skill Glyphs.
Level 66, 68, and 70 give you Tals. They impact a specific skill and you need to use Skill Advancement Scrolls, Advancement Points, and Gold to advance the talents, kind of like how you use EP points to advance talents. They can be advanced up to 60 times.
Level 67 and 69 give you Yphs. These also revolve around a specific skill and you'll get 3 choices of what kind of Yph you want to activate. You can only have one Yph at 67 and one at 69. You can swap the Yph you pick when you're out of combat, just like glyphs. Unlocking a Yph requires gold, Advancement Points, and Skill Optimization Scrolls. You only need to unlock each Yph once and you can do them in any order.
Just like with materials for enchants, you'll have to run specific content to get the scrolls and XP needed for using your Advanced Skills.
How To Farm The Required Bits
This part kind of sucks, depending on the kind of content you like to run.
Levels 66 through 70
Get Exp. If you do the questline [Important] The Nightmare Begins, you'll get enough XP to get to levle 68. Otherwise, running Macellarius Catacombs is the most consistant way to quickly get XP. From 68 to 70, MC remains the fastest way to level through normal means. Events may offer instant 70 scrolls or other experience sources. This part is relatively braindead and you'll finish leveling long before you finish getting all the bits you need for maxing out your advanced skills.
Skill Advancement XP for Advancement Points
The first consumable "point" system you need will be Skill Advancement Points. You get Skill Advancement Points by getting Skill Advancement XP. You can track your current Advancement Points and XP from the progress bar on the bottom of the advanced skills tab of your skills window.
Note
The Skill Advancement XP is out of date with Patch 92 rearranging stuff. The advancement and optimization scrolls are current though.
List of places to get skill advancement XP consumables and where to get them:
[Party] Low Skill Advancement XP I [Boss] (15,967 skill advancement XP)
[Party] Medium Skill Advancement XP I [Boss] (35,128 skill advancement XP)
[Party] High Skill Advancement XP I [Boss] (319,334 skill advancement XP)
- ??
The other end-game dungeons drop medium and high skill advancement items but they aren't listed in the loot tables. So run dungeons to get skill advancement. I'll add in the dungeons as I run them and notice the small/medium/large type from last boss.

Although there are a lot of dailies that can offer advancement and optimization scrolls, they were made moot with the introduction of the 4 Exodor Dailies. They each require killing 100 mobs in the four different Exodor areas (Verrak Fortress, Iridian Wetlands, Exodor Farmlands, and Rogash's Garden). The Important reward is an Exodor Skill Advancement Box, which has 50 Advancement Scroll I's and II's, 25x Optimization Scroll I's and II's, and 20 Advancement Scroll III's.
Skill Advancement Books and Skill OptimizaitonBooks
Patch 97 introduced Skill Advancement Books, which allow you to skip the gold and scroll requirements for level 66, 68, and 70 Skill Advancement. It looks like you still need to have the Skill Advancement points though. The books are available from Events and may be available through other means in the game as well. These can be especially useful for the last few levels, like 50 to 60, where a single advnacement can cost over 15k gold. There are apparenelty also Skill Optimization Books in the code but no sources for them yet.

How Long Does it Take to Get Enough Scrolls
A month. If you are starting from scratch, it will take 1193 Guardian Chest additional rewards (approximately 29 days of doing all 40 chests each day) or 112 Exodor Daily reward chests (28 days of doing all 4 Dailies) to get enough Scrolls to max out one character. Dungeons during double drop can be a good source for the I's and II's. Consider using the Optimization scrolls as your main source of Advancement III's since you require so few of them and they convert at 3:1 instead of 7:1 with the Advancement I's and II's.

Requirements and Buff Calculator
Note
The gold costs of skill advancements was cut in recent patches (late 99 or 100) but haven't all been confirmed yet. Assume it will cost half as much gold as calculated below.
Wondering how much these advanced skill will cost you? Put in your starting and ending Advanced Skill level to see how much it will cost. For the skill optimization options, select how many you want to unlock for level 67 and 69. You will usually only need one of each unless you Tank and DPS as a Warrior or Brawler. Healers get crit factor from advanced skill I instead of power, and vice versa for advanced skill II. Change the setting to account for this.

now there is skill advancement book and skill optimization book options when upgrading talyphs which saves you from using gold, skill advancement book can be bought at the event npc, but cant seem to find the skill optimization book anywhere…
It looked like the event NPC only had items for the Advancement. It’s pretty valuable for the last few advancements of each of the tal’s. They might end up only being available as event items periodically, though it’d be nice if they were made more accessible.
